Yes, you could use this 2000W unit with your 12V 100Ah battery. However, it will not perform reliably β especially under high-power loads.
As per Watt's Law, running the inverter at 2000W on a 12V system requires approximately 167 amps (2000W Γ· 12V). However, a typical 100Ah lithium battery has a maximum continuous discharge rating (C-rate) of around 100 amps. This falls well short of what the inverter needs to operate at full capacity.
To safely run the inverter at its full 2000W output, you will need at least a 200Ah battery or two 100Ah batteries connected in parallel. If you attempt to use the inverter with a single 100Ah lithium battery, the battery's built-in BMS (Battery Management System) will likely trigger and shut down the system to protect the cells.
But even when the 100Ah battery manages to run it, the inverter will only operate for less than 30 minutes. Such rapid discharge is not good for your leisure battery as it accelerates cell degradation, prompting you to get a replacement in less than a year.
Why 100Ah Lead-Acid Batteries Are Even Worse
The situation is even more problematic when you attempt to run this inverter with a 12V 100Ah lead-acid battery.
Scenario 1 β Lead-acid batteries usually have a continuous discharge rate of 0.2C, which equates to just 20 amps for a 100Ah battery. To support a 2000W inverter, you would need approximately ten 100Ah lead-acid batteries in parallel (or one 1000Ah battery).
Scenario 2 β For longevity and safety, lead-acid batteries should not be discharged below 50% capacity. Therefore, a 100Ah battery only provides 50Ah of usable capacity, so even if the inverter could run, it would last just 15 minutes or less. Repeated deep, rapid discharges like this will severely shorten the battery's lifespan.
Scenario 3 β Lead-acid batteries are designed for short, high-current bursts (such as starting an engine). Drawing a continuous 167 amps will cause a significant voltage sag (a brief reduction in voltage). The sudden voltage drop may trigger the inverter's under-voltage protection and cause it to shut down before starting.
Inverter Output and Efficiency Considerations
In this Renogy unit, the 2000W rating refers to its maximum continuous output. If your connected AC loads exceed this limit, the inverter's overload protection will activate and shut it down.
Generally, when using any inverter, you must keep your connected load below its maximum continuous capacity. The common industry guideline is the 80% rule, though a 10% headroom (1800W maximum load) is often sufficient for most users. Therefore, limit your total AC load to 1600β1800W for the best performance.
As for efficiency, our tests achieved approximately 91% efficiency (Renogy rates it at 90%). This means it actually draws between 2,198W and 2,222W from the battery. If we use a more realistic figure of 2220W with our previous calculations, the inverter requires about 185 amps from the battery bank (2220W Γ· 12V). But even then, you still need a minimum of 200Ah battery capacity for safe and reliable operation.
How Much Power Does This Inverter Use on Standby?
Renogy advertises this inverter with a static consumption of 1.3A. In our testing, however, we measured the inverter drawing 14β15W on standby, which is slightly lower than the advertised 16β17W.
That said, 15 watts is still a significant amount of wasted power over time. In 12 hours, that equates to 180Wh of lost energy β enough to run five downlights for the same period. For this reason, you should always turn the inverter off when you're not using it. It's one of the main reasons the unit includes a remote switch.
How Long Will a 200Ah Battery Run a 2000W Inverter?
As mentioned earlier, you need at least a 200Ah battery β preferably a deep-cycle lithium battery β to efficiently and safely run this inverter. If you were to run it at its maximum capacity (which we do not recommend), it would draw approximately 2200W when we take the 90β91% efficiency into account.
At a safe 90% depth of discharge, your 200Ah lithium battery would power the inverter for about 58 minutes: (90% Γ 200Ah Γ 12V) Γ· 2200W = 58 minutes. If you were to use the full 200Ah (also not recommended), the inverter would run for approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes.
It is therefore a good idea to run the inverter while your leisure battery is being recharged β either by solar or the alternator β so the lost energy can be recovered. We also recommend using a larger battery bank (400Ah or more) if you plan to run high loads regularly.
Do You Need an Electrician to Install It?
Not necessarily. If you have basic DC wiring knowledge, you can install the inverter yourself. The unit requires only battery input connections on the DC side, as the AC side comes with pre-installed sockets for both output and input.
However, if your vehicle does not have a dedicated shore power plug for the inverter's AC input, you will need a licensed electrician to install it.
