Renogy DC to DC Charger Review: The Newer 40A (40D1U) for Caravans, Campervans & Boats

A hands-on review of the newer Renogy 40A DC to DC charger (40D1U) for caravans, campervans and boats, comparing it with the older DCC1212-40 on charging speed, efficiency, cooling and price.

Renogy is a great option when you need a premium DC to DC battery charger without breaking the bank. Its newer 40A model is an excellent example, and after testing it for a while, we're quite impressed by its charging capabilities. It can take a lithium battery from its 20% discharge floor to 100% in just 2 hours, and compared with the older 40A charger, it's not only faster but also more efficient.

Like previous DC-DC battery chargers from the company, this Renogy power supply system has a durable build and reliable performance β€” both important aspects while off-grid in your van, truck or boat. It's also very convenient, as you can pair it with your phone or tablet for real-time monitoring. And as we'll cover later in this review, you can configure the device for either short-range or long-range wireless monitoring (from anywhere).

In this review, we break down the specs, features and real-world charging performance of the 40D1U, and how it stacks up against its predecessor.

What Does the Renogy 40D1U DC to DC Charger Offer Vans and Boats?

When travelling in a caravan, campervan, RV or boat, power self-sufficiency is everything. One feature we particularly like in the 40D1U is that it can charge your leisure battery at a constant 40 amps.

Of course, some people still find the 20-amp version (Renogy 20D1U) sufficient for their needs, but the 40-amp charging power of the 40D1U replenishes a 100 Ah battery in under 3 hours. This makes it a lifesaver during winter or when you're out camping with insufficient or no solar.

Another amazing feature of this Renogy DC-DC battery charger is that it works with various battery types, including lead-acid options β€” Flooded (FLD), Gel-Sealed (GEL), Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) β€” and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) ones. It supports this with an input voltage range of 9–16 V and a dedicated button for selecting the ideal battery type you want to charge.

Hands-On Review: Features and Capabilities to Expect While Off-Grid

We refer to the 40D1U as the "newer" DC to DC charger because it improves over the older DCC1212-40. Below, we cover the features of the latest design while comparing it with the older version.

What's in the Box?

When you unbox a brand-new unit for the first time, you'll find:

  • Renogy 40D1U Unit
  • IGN Signal Wire
  • Battery Temperature Sensor (BTS)
  • User Guide
  • Four stainless steel mounting screws

How Durable Is the Build?

Renogy is a trusted name in the caravanning and RVing industry, and it has delivered another strong product with this charger. It features a rugged, corrosion-resistant metal base plate paired with a durable plastic front cover. The rear base plate incorporates large heatsink fins for rapid heat dissipation, ensuring reliable performance even in high-temperature environments.

In fact, this charger operates reliably across a wide temperature range of -25Β°C to 60Β°C. This makes it an excellent choice for adventures in cold regions such as Tasmania and Victoria, and the intense heat of the Australian Outback.

Moreover, the 40D1U features a decently-sealed enclosure with an IP32 ingress protection rating, which provides effective defence against light accidental water splashes. This represents a meaningful improvement over the IP20 rating of the older Renogy DCC1212-40, although it is not fully waterproof.

Design and Dimensions

The newer Renogy 40A DC-DC Battery Charger features a completely redesigned appearance compared to its predecessor. It has a sleeker, more modern look that allows it to be mounted in plain sight without looking obtrusive.

The unit is also more compact, measuring 23.7 Γ— 15.3 Γ— 5.8 cm and just 2 kilos in weight. As a result, it takes less space on your power board or mounting surface.

Which Batteries and Alternators Is It Compatible With?

The default input voltage range of the Renogy 40D1U is 9–16 V, so you can only use it with 12V adventure vans, RVs, campervans and boats. However, this range allows for safe and effective charging of various battery types, including lead-acid-based (Flooded, Gel, AGM) and deep-cycle lithium options.

The 9–16 V input range also ensures compatibility with both traditional/conventional and smart alternators. But for smart alternators, you must connect the charger to the ignition signal port (using the provided IGN wire) to guarantee optimal and safe charging behaviour.

Moreover, the DC charger allows you to switch to the custom "User" mode. In this mode, you can manually configure charging parameters as follows:

  • Input voltage: 7–17 V
  • Charging current: 40 A, 30 A, 20 A, or 10 A

How Easy Is It to Install in a Caravan or Campervan?

This newer charger is straightforward to install and becomes even easier if your caravan, RV, campervan or boat has a traditional 12V alternator. You only have to connect the unit to your leisure battery and starter battery, observing correct polarity.

The charger features separate positive and negative terminals for input and output. This separated design is typical of isolated DC-DC chargers, although Renogy does not explicitly mention it's an "isolated" model anywhere in the provided user manual.

After connecting the charger to your batteries, install the supplied battery temperature sensor to enable temperature compensation and optimise performance under varying conditions. Then, configure the charger for your battery type using the push-button switch located next to the LED indicators.

How Do You Operate and Monitor It?

Once installed, the 40D1U is extremely simple to use. It only requires you to start the engine and drive to charge the connected leisure battery. The only time you may need to intervene is to reconfigure the charger for a different battery type. And even then, the process is still intuitive, as you simply press the built-in button while watching the "Battery Type" LED indicator (the third one) until the desired mode lights up.

Here's what the different "Battery Type" indicator colours mean:

  • Green β€” AGM battery
  • Yellow β€” GEL battery
  • Light Blue β€” Lithium battery (activation disabled)
  • Dark Blue β€” Lithium battery (activation enabled)
  • Grey β€” User Mode (customisable parameters)
  • Red β€” Flooded Lead-Acid battery

On the output side, the charger includes an RS485 port that lets you connect a Renogy Bluetooth Module. This allows pairing with your phone or tablet for real-time monitoring and easier configuration from 10–20 metres away. You can also pair the unit with the Renogy ONE Core smart display, enabling you to monitor system health and adjust settings remotely from anywhere.

How Fast Does It Charge a Leisure Battery?

After mounting, setting up and configuring the required settings, the Renogy 40D1U DC-DC Charger begins recharging your leisure battery within seconds. It performs as expected, delivering 550–600 watts of power.

While this confirms the advertised 94% charging efficiency, how consistently the charger maintains that power output to your leisure battery depends on the alternator's output and the condition of the starter battery. The recharge speed also varies based on the leisure battery's total capacity, current state of charge (SoC) and internal chemistry.

For example, a lithium battery at 20% SoC can recharge faster than a lead-acid battery at 50% SoC because lithium cells can accept high charging current all the way to full charge. In contrast, a flooded lead-acid battery requires progressively lower charging rates as it approaches full charge to prevent overheating and gassing. It therefore goes through all three charging stages β€” Bulk, Absorption (or Boost) and Float β€” whereas the last two stages do not apply to lithium batteries.

Speaking of lithium batteries, this charger can reactivate "sleeping" lithium batteries β€” a protective mode triggered by the built-in BMS after deep discharge or overcharge. However, the "Lithium Activation" feature is disabled by default, so you must enable it manually before use.

How Efficient Is It Compared With the Older DCC1212-40?

Efficiency is a critical factor when travelling in a campervan, caravan, RV or boat, and the 40D1U excels in this area. It delivers approximately 600 watts of charging power, 94% efficiency, full-load operation up to 45Β°C, and idle power consumption of less than 15 mA.

These specifications represent a significant improvement over the older Renogy DCC1212-40, which was rated at 500 watts charging power, 90% efficiency, full load only up to 30Β°C, and 0.40amp idle consumption.

How Does the Passive Cooling Perform?

Unlike the older version, the newer charger does not include built-in fans. Instead, it relies on large heatsink fins on the back of its metal base plate to accelerate passive heat dissipation.

Although heatsinks do not cool as aggressively as active fan systems, this charger remains fully operational at extreme temperatures β€” up to 60Β°C (140Β°F). It also features built-in temperature compensation of -3 mV/Β°C per 2 V for lead-acid batteries for accurate monitoring. This ensures safe and efficient charging of AGM, GEL or flooded lead-acid batteries even as ambient or battery temperatures rise.

More importantly, the passive (heatsink-based) cooling allows this battery charger to operate completely silently β€” no fan noise whatsoever. It also contributes to the unit's high conversion efficiency by eliminating the parasitic power draw of a fan motor.

What Safety Protections Are Built In?

Renogy has equipped this charger with a comprehensive set of safety protections to ensure reliable and secure operation. These include safeguards against reverse polarity, overvoltage, overtemperature, overdischarge and short-circuit conditions. Any fault is clearly indicated by the built-in "Fault" LED.

As mentioned earlier, the charger also features a corrosion-resistant construction and an IP32-rated enclosure β€” both of which further enhance overall safety and durability.

How Much Does the Renogy 40D1U Cost in Australia?

All the features we've covered so far are the most critical considerations when choosing a DC to DC charger for your adventure vehicle or boat. However, pricing is also important β€” especially if you're on a tight budget but still need a premium charging solution for your leisure battery.

The good news is that the 40D1U is priced at just $205 at Campervan Builders, including its basic accessories and a 2-year warranty. During our frequent limited-time deals, you can often get it for under $200 or with excellent free add-ons, making it a real steal given its extensive features and capabilities.
