Starlink Internet is changing the way we stay connected, especially for those who camp and caravan – whether regularly or occasionally. The Starlink Mini internet, recently released in Australia, makes it possible to connect from anywhere, from the Outback to even the most remote mountain locations. Starlink Mini from SpaceX
Starlink is an internet service like any other, and it does have its drawbacks, mainly the initial costs. However, this is a small price to pay for the convenience and reliability the Starlink Mini provides for your caravan and camping adventures.
The new Starlink Mini, launched in June, is compact, lightweight, and comes with a built-in router. You can easily relocate the dish to where it catches more of the satellite's signal for faster browsing, streaming, and gaming speeds.
Starlink Mini offers internet connectivity starting from as low as A$80/month at full speed, which is more than enough for streaming, video calls, and most regular internet use cases. But is this full data speed as fast as the Standard Starlink? Do I still get fast speeds while driving my campervan? And how good is the internet while connected to multiple devices?

Starlink Mini: The Ideal Campervan Accessory
Starlink Mini is one of the best campervan accessories today, and a necessity to make the most of your camping trip. Whether it's making emergency calls while in the middle of nowhere or monitoring your home remotely, Starlink Mini has you covered. Plus, you can use it for WiFi calling, allowing you to stay in touch even in remote locations.
Like many of Elon Musk's innovations, SpaceX's Starlink Mini internet has plenty of exciting features worth discussing. For now, let's focus on the most commonly asked features.
Do I Need a Technician to Set Up Starlink Mini Internet?
Starlink Mini Internet is entirely plug-and-play and easy to set up on your own. At launch, Elon Musk claimed on X/Twitter that he set it up in “less than 5 minutes” – which is definitely possible for most users!
With everything out of the box, you just insert the provided power adapter into an electrical source and plug the other end of the cable into the dish. Once powered, the Starlink Mini will need to face south in Australia to communicate with Starlink’s internet satellites. Then, connect your phone to the “Starlink” WiFi SSID to start configuration via the Starlink mobile app.
The mobile app guides you through the entire setup with on-screen instructions, starting with calculating the orientation to determine how your Starlink Mini is pointing to the satellites. If misaligned, the app will guide you to adjust the dish for optimal orientation.
Once properly oriented and online, the Starlink Mini will download the latest firmware (takes about 5 minutes). Then, you'll configure the WiFi (set up your username and password) and run a software update (takes about 10 minutes). The whole process should take about 15-20 minutes.
Can I Power Starlink Mini Off My Car Battery?
The Starlink Mini doesn’t require a lot of power to operate. It consumes up to 60 watts while booting up and 25 to 40 watts during normal use. You can easily power Starlink Mini off your car battery, making it perfect for off-grid use.
You will need a Starlink USB-C to Barrel Jack Cable or a Starlink Mini USB-C to DC cable to power it this way. Starlink Mini also comes with accessories such as a kickstand for quick dish support on flat surfaces, or a pipe adapter for a more permanent installation.
Other accessories available for Starlink Mini include:
- Starlink Mini Magnet Mount: Provides a secure mounting solution for vehicles. Starlink Mini Angled Magnet Mount
- Mini Starlink Dish Protector: Protects the dish from hail, debris, and other elements.
- Starlink Mini Cigarette Lighter Power Cable: Easily connects to your vehicle’s cigarette lighter socket. Cigarette socket plug and play
- Starlink Mini Anderson Plug: Connects your satellite dish to your caravan’s DC power. Anderson socket plug and play
- Starlink Mini USB-C Cable (20V 100W): Suitable for powering Starlink Mini from portable power sources. Starlink mini USB-C cable 20V 100W
- Starlink Mini Flat Mount: Ideal for flat surfaces. Starlink Mini Flat Mount
What’s the Fastest Speed Test of Starlink Mini Internet in Australia?
Starlink Mini’s internet speeds are comparable to the older Standard Starlink internet. On good days with no obstructions or congestion, Starlink Mini can deliver up to 150+ Mbps download and 15+ Mbps upload. The fastest speeds I’ve personally seen are 138 Mbps for downloads and 18 Mbps for uploads, but speeds can drop to around 46 Mbps if there’s obstruction or congestion.
Starlink Mini's internet latency is quite good, typically ranging between 20-40ms (occasionally 50ms). This is better than many other satellite internet services, as Starlink satellites are in low-Earth orbit (LEO), resulting in lower latency.
It’s worth noting that Starlink Mini supports in-motion use, so you can stay connected even on the road, although data speeds may fluctuate due to changing dish orientation.

Yes! Starlink Mini is one of the best solutions for reliable internet on the go. It’s a great choice for anyone with a caravan, campervan, RV, or motorhome who wants to stay connected anywhere!
One of the main issues affecting Starlink connectivity is power interruptions. In severe cases, this can lead to signal interference and internet outages. However, the dish will automatically reboot and reconnect after 30-90 seconds. You can avoid these power issues by using our plug-and-play adapters.
Is Starlink Mini Internet Worth it for Campers/Caravanners?
Having internet while camping has several advantages, such as remote work, monitoring your home, keeping in touch with friends, and making emergency calls.
