It holds on bare steel. Most van roofs, bonnets, bullbars and steel body panels are a solid bet, and it's been field-tested holding firm at highway speeds on the right surface.
The catch is that magnets only grab ferrous metal, so it won't hold on aluminium roofs, fibreglass caravans, plastic panels or composite bodies. A quick way to check is to grab a fridge magnet and hold it against the spot you're planning to mount to. If the fridge magnet sticks, this mount will too.
For the best hold, mount it to a clean, flat section with no big gaps or heavy texture underneath. If you're not sure whether your surface will suit, send us a photo of the spot and we'll let you know straight up.

For in-motion use, we recommend mounting the Starlink Mini flat, not angled.
A common misconception is that the dish should be angled to improve performance while driving. While angling can help if the vehicle is always travelling in one direction, that is not how real-world driving works. Your vehicle is constantly changing direction, so an angled mount can quickly end up pointing the wrong way.
Flat mounting gives the Starlink Mini the most consistent all-round performance while driving. The difference between flat mounting and a perfectly angled setup is usually minor, but the performance drop from being angled in the wrong direction can be much more noticeable.
For this reason, a flat mount is the best setup for reliable in-motion use.
Yes, the mount comes with fixings to mount to nearly all roof racks. It is not compatible with ARB. It is compatible with the new rhino racks.
